Indian Head Massage
I was looking for a postcard in the hill town of Shimla in India and I ended up experiencing one of the most painful massages ever. My first Indian Head massage left me wondering if it really was a wise choice to embrace the cultural experiences whilst on holiday, but also left me without headaches for the last 8 years.
Indian Head massage has its ancient roots in the Ayurvedic health system, which takes an holistic approach to health – treating the whole person rather than a specific symptom of pain. Forward to the 21st century and it’s as relevant as ever to aid relaxation, reduce stress and relieve pain and headaches.
Whether or not you believe in the need to balance your chakras, Indian Head massage can benefit you. Our head, neck and shoulders are probably the most vulnerable areas of our body to stress and tension. Indian Head massage will relieve tension as well as stimulating the body.
One of the main benefits is in stress reduction which can lead to reduced inflammation in all areas of the body, reduced fatigue and a greater ability to focus. Keeping the neck and shoulders in fixed positions for long periods of time can lead to discomfort – common if you work in an office environment – Indian Head massage can help with this and can restore the range of motion at the neck and shoulder joints to give a more comfortable posture.
Stimulation of the nerves, muscles and blood flow in and around the head will encourage the delivery of nutrition to the cells alongside removal of waste products making for a healthier body.
A treatment will last between 25 and 45 minutes and can be done in a clinic situation, at home or even in an office.
My more recent experiences of Indian Head massage have felt a lot more relaxing than that first one, with equal benefit so don’t worry about it being painful.
